Castrol Rustilo Aqua 30
Castrol Rustilo Aqua 30 Aqueous Corrosion Preventive
Castrol Rustilo Aqua 30 (previously called Aquasafe 30) is a new technology, high-performance, environmentally friendly water-based corrosion preventive formulated on a selected blend of corrosion inhibitors. Rustilo Aqua 30 deposits an almost imperceptible light, soft greasy film, which is usually just provided by solvent-based products. Rustilo Aqua 30 does not contain heavy metals, such as barium.
Rustilo Aqua 30 is an aqueous temporary corrosion preventive providing short to medium term protection on metal parts and components during intermediate storage or transportation.
The product is intended for dip, low-pressure spray and/or flood applications.
Castrol Rustilo Aqua 30 Aqueous Corrosion Preventive Advantages:
- Water-based corrosion preventive – environmentally friendly, provides a safer working environment.
- Solvent-free formulation:
– Eliminates fire hazard.
– Potential for reduced insurance premiums.
– Not regulated by VOC legislation.
– Non-ozone depleting.
– Assists in achieving ISO 14001. - Deposits a very thin protective film.
- Safe and easy handling of components.
- Provides excellent ferrous corrosion protection.
- Low foam – suitable for dip, flood and low-pressure spray applications.
- Short drying time – minimum impact on process/production times.
- If required protective films of Rustilo Aqua™ 30 can be removed by using a petroleum solvent or alkaline process cleaner, all available from Castrol.

User Advice
Before treatment with Rustilo Aqua™ 30 the parts surface should be free of contaminants, such as oils, greases and particles to ensure its best performance.
A very important aspect of water-based corrosion preventives is the drying time; once the product has been applied onto the components. It must be allowed to dry (> 30 minutes) before the packaging of treated components in order to ensure maximum corrosion protection.
Using supportive drying equipment, e.g. a hot air blower, could further reduce drying time.
Regularly check the pH of the product and ensure that the pH is maintained between 8.7 – 9.5.
Once the product is introduced into a holding tank pending application, it is advised to keep this tank covered to reduce evaporation losses and reduction of deposit formations onto the application equipment. The application tank should ideally receive agitation or stirring to maintain product dispersion.
The concentration of the film-forming content of Rustilo Aqua™ 30 is determined by the non-volatile residues (total solids).
In order to minimise the risk of any stability or corrosion issues caused by increasing levels of water hardness and corrosive inorganic salts (i.e. chloride) it is recommended to top-up evaporation losses with deionised water.
Additional Information
The claims on film thickness and consumption are average values. These are valid for smooth surfaces with good drain-off characteristics and simple geometries without holes or recesses.
Average drying time is the time until the majority of the solvent is evaporated at ambient temperature and a relative humidity of 60 – 70%. The full corrosion protection will be provided when the solvent is completely evaporated.
(*) “Indoor storage” describes the storage of ferrous components in closed store-rooms having a relative humidity of 60%. Increased protection times could be achieved by treating finished surfaces or storing the parts in a sealed pack.
(**) “Outdoor storage” describes open storage, which assumes primary protection from the elements by tarpaulin or
other form of cover.
Storage
To avoid product deterioration always keep the container/drum tightly sealed. Store the product in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Prevent exposure to frost and avoid water ingress.
For optimum product stability, it is preferable to store the product indoors between 5°C and 45 °C / 41°F and 113°F.
