DESCRIPTION

CASTROL OPTIGEAR® SYNTHETIC X is based on synthetic hydrocarbons and a special PD additive.
The additive package, when activated by high specific loads and corresponding temperatures, helps to equalize surface roughness without creating abrasion, the so-called plastic deformation.
CASTROL OPTIGEAR® SYNTHETIC X synthetic gear oil is a CLP-HC gear oil (according to DIN 51502) and exceeds the minimum requirements according to DIN 51517, part 3, CLP gear oils.

 

APPLICATIONS

  • CASTROL OPTIGEAR® SYNTHETIC X may be used as gear oil in spur gear, bevel gears or planetary gear units in heavy loaded gear units, e.g. wind turbine main gears.
  • It is also suitable for the lubrication of oil-lubricated rolling bearings.
  • Depending on the specific application, CASTROL OPTIGEAR® SYNTHETIC X may be used in an operating temperature range from -30 °C to +95 °C.

OPTIGEAR® SYNTHETIC A are fully synthetic high performance gear oils with MICROFLUX TRANS® additives.
They offer optimum wear protection under very extreme thermal loads and operating conditions such as vibrations, oscillating motions and shock loads. The wide range of temperature - especially in case of low starting temperatures - and the high load carrying capacity are special assets of these industrial gear oils. Thermally and mechanically stable polyalphaolefin and the MICROFLUX TRANS® additive combination adjust themselves to the changing operating conditions and actively prevent wear.

Castrol Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds are manufactured by adding a small amount of a synthetic thickener to standard ISO grade gear oils. The small addition has a moderate thickening effect on the oils, especially in the container, or while not in motion. During the stirring action of gears and bearings, however, 969 exhibits the rapid flow and film-forming characteristics similar to the original base gear oils.

 

Application

Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds were originally developed for service in heavy duty earth moving equipment such as shovels and draglines. Surging stress and vibration on these machines inevitably produces some degree of leakage from gear cases. Excessive leakage at shaft seals is not uncommon on hoist, drag, propel, and especially swing gear cases of large draglines and swing cases of shovels. Often the tramp oil will contaminate the heavy gear compounds necessary to lubricate the exposed open gear drives. The use of 969 Gear Compounds can also be extended to control leaks in gear sets in industrial and marine applications. Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds are specially formulated to help control leaks in gear cases.

The synthetic thickener forms a mat-like matrix at the points of leakage to minimise the flow of oil. Leakage from gear cases has traditionally been controlled by the substitution of a grease for the lubricating oil. This is unsatisfactory because greases can channel, and are poor at carrying heat away from the meshing gears and dissipating from the gear case. The moderate thickening of Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds are not the characteristic that helps to control leaks at cracks and seals, it is the nature of the synthetic thickener to link or gel to bridge the opening with a restricting consistency. Other than this restricting action at small openings, Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds act very much like the original base gear oil in service.

Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds were developed using base oil viscosities of ISO standard grades. Currently we offer a leak resistant gear oil with the base oil ISO viscosity grade of 320.

 

Important Restrictions

Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds are not for use in units that include a central lubricating system as they will not pump like an oil nor flow through small lines. 969 will plug filters (see NOTES).

Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds should not be used in gear cases where shaft bearings are lubricated by oil flowing through small lines or orifices as they will seal small openings or seriously restrict oil flow. On the other hand, where bearings are submerged, and oil flow is not unidirectional, flow is not restricted.

Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds are designed for use in gearboxes where gear oil make-up volumes are unacceptable due to worn shaft seals or other minor causes of leakage. Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds are not designed to prevent leakage due to gross mechanical defects such as worn bearings and damage causing shafts to experience excessive play which results in excessive lubricant make up. The Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds would not normally be used in non-leaking gearboxes as a preventative measure.

 

Notes

  • Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds may be metered through grease pumping systems, but would be expected to cavitate in oil circulating pumps.
  • Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds will flow readily when agitated but should not be expected to flow by gravity or feed through small lines. Molub-Alloy 969 Leak Resistant Gear Compounds must be stirred vigorously before use.
  • Since filters must be removed when using 969, routine oil sampling is strongly recommended.

Application

Tribol 1100 Gear Oils with TGOA, represent a significant advancement in gear oil technology. Developed for service in enclosed gear drives, journals and anti-friction bearings, the Tribol 1100 Gear Oils are typically used where heavy and shock load conditions prevail. TGOA is an oil soluble additive package designed to reduce friction while providing surface protection and improvement. The TGOA additive package out-performs all other EP and anti-wear additives because of its unique action on frictional surfaces. The TGOA additive package is activated by high specific loads and corresponding temperatures causing a chemical-physical reaction. This results in an equalisation of surface roughness without creating abrasion. Therefore, surface roughness is reduced without the loss of surface material.

The results of the TGOA additive can be compared with a rolling process in the micro-range. The surface roughness is gradually levelled and smoothed. Through smoothing of the working surfaces, the loads are distributed over increasing areas and the actual load-bearing areas are enlarged.

During the running-in process, the TGOA additive package creates an optimum of smooth contact surfaces. If, because of shock loads or stop-and-go operation, surface roughness peaks redevelop, the TGOA additive package is automatically reactivated. Surface roughness is again equalised and lubrication optimised.

Tribol 1100 Gear Oils with TGOA additive package are particularly valuable in the running-in process as well as in applications where surfaces have already been damaged in the micro-range. Typical applications are spur, helical, herringbone, bevel, and planetary gears. They are also used in geared couplings. Tribol 1100 Oils may be used in anti-friction and journal bearings.

Notes:

  • Tribol 1100 Gear oils are compatible with other petroleum gear oils.
  • This means that traces of previous oil remaining in the gear case after draining will not pose any problems. However, the beneficial effects of the TGOA additives are reduced when Tribol 1100 Oils are mixed with other gear oils.

Castrol Tribol™ 800 synthetic gear oils have been developed for the lubrication of heavily loaded gears, bushings and bearings which may operate over a broad range of temperatures from ambient to elevated temperatures (>80°C/176°F). They are particularly intended to extend the service life of both lubricant and machine parts where unusually high operating and oil reservoir temperatures are encountered. The high performance characteristics of Tribol 800 are achieved with select polyalkyleneglycol (PAG) based synthetic fluids. They feature chemical and thermal stability, high viscosity index, water solubility, and compatibility with metals and elastomers most commonly used in machine construction. The naturally high resistance to oxidation of the synthetic base fluid is further enhanced by inhibitors. Corrosion protection is very effective even in the presence of water. Also, a package of high performance additives acts in combination for superior anti-wear and Extreme Pressure (EP) performance.

 

Application

The Tribol 800 range is especially suited to reservoirs and circulation systems operating at high temperatures because of heat generated in severe service or high temperatures in the application. Castrol Tribol 800’s are intended for all types of heavily loaded gears including spur, bevel and worm gears. Although well suited for all types of gearing and bearings, the Tribol 800 range is particularly effective in controlling wear and reducing friction between sliding surfaces. In addition, they possess a high degree of affinity for cupric metal alloys.

Additional Information:
Tribol 800 synthetic gear oils are water soluble, so spills may be cleaned up with water. They are NOT compatible with mineral (petroleum) based lubricants. Condensation water may be absorbed without the damage of corrosion or a change in viscosity. Cleaning lubrication systems with a flushing oil or Tribol 800 prior to the first filling is recommended. To achieve long drain cycles and obtain the economic advantages, systems must be free of contaminants.
The Tribol 800 range is compatible with most seals including Viton A and nitrile or Buna N (NBR). 800’s are NOT compatible with neoprene (polychloroprene) and butadiene seals - mixed polymers, stryenebutadienes, polystyrene, or methacrylates.
